Ventrilo uses voice codecs to turn your voice into a digital format so it can travel over the internet to others that are in your ventrilo channel. Choosing the right codec for your server or channel is important depending on what kind of users you are going to have connected to your vent server.
Codecs such as GSM 6.10 is a high-quality codec that is used by gamers in a windows environment. Although GSM 6.10 is a high-quality codec, it is not compatible with a MAC PC. Mac users on your ventrilo server would have issues communicating with you in your channel of you are using the GSM 6.10 codec.
There is, however, a compatible codec for windows and mac users called Speex. Speex is a high-quality codec that, while in my opinion doesn’t sound quite as good as GSM 6.10, offers you a good quality sound while being compatible with Mac users as well as Windows users.
Why is choosing the right codec important? Well for games such as World of Warcraft, it is compatible on the mac platform as well as the windows platform. When you are in a guild, and and you want to be able to communicate with all the other guild members on your vent server, if you are not using the speex codec, you may not be able to communicate with everyone.
Ventrilo is a very low resource, high-quality application that allows individuals to communicate over the internet at an extremely affordable rate. ITG offers several user packages and also provides instant activation on each and every ventrilo server package available.
